Admission

  • Students must meet age, immunization, and other eligibility requirements under state law and board policy.
  • The district may deny admission for certain expulsions from other districts as required by law.
  • Questions? Contact the school office for current enrollment requirements and forms.

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential to student success. Oregon law requires students ages 7–18 to attend school unless exempt.

Absences

  • Excused for illness, family emergency, medical/dental appointments, school activities, and other administrator‑approved reasons.
  • Please call the office when your child is absent. Send a note on return if requested.
  • Unexcused absences and repeated tardies may lead to progressive intervention and possible citations per compulsory attendance law.

Tardies

  • School day begins at 8:10 a.m. Students not in class and ready are tardy and should check in at the office.

Student Conduct

HES expects students to be Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. The Code of Conduct applies on campus, at activities, and on transportation.

  • Prohibited: harassment/bullying (including cyberbullying), threats, violence, weapons, vandalism/theft, drugs/alcohol/tobacco/vapes, and major disruptions.
  • Consequences may include detention, suspension, expulsion, loss of privileges, and/or referral to law enforcement as applicable.
  • Complaints of harassment, discrimination, or sexual harassment are investigated promptly. Retaliation is prohibited.

Dress & Grooming

Clothing should support a safe, respectful learning environment.

  • No items promoting alcohol, drugs, profanity, or hate.
  • Avoid strapless/see‑through tops, midriff‑exposing shirts; no gang‑related attire; shoes suitable for movement/recess.
  • Students may be asked to change clothing that disrupts learning or safety.

Personal Electronic Devices & Social Media

  • Devices must be off and put away during the instructional day unless a teacher permits academic use.
  • Progressive steps: reminder → confiscation for parent pickup → longer holds for repeated violations.
  • Taking or sharing inappropriate images is prohibited and may be referred to law enforcement.

Health & Communicable Disease

  • Please keep students home for fever (≥100.5°F), vomiting/diarrhea (24 hours symptom‑free to return), or other contagious conditions.
  • Some conditions require clearance by health professionals before return. Contact the office/nurse with questions.
  • Vision (and dental for first‑time enrollees) screenings certifications are required by state law within timelines.

Medication at School

  • All meds (prescription or over‑the‑counter) require completed forms and must be in original containers, kept in the office unless otherwise authorized.
  • Trained staff may administer epi or other emergency meds per law and district procedure.

Safety, Drills & Emergencies

  • Monthly fire drills; annual earthquake and safety‑threat drills (lockdown/lockout/shelter/evacuation).
  • Parents will be notified of emergency closures or schedule changes via district communications.

Meals & Wellness

  • HES participates in federal nutrition programs and offers free breakfast, snacks, and lunch for students.
  • Adults may purchase lunch; contact the office for current pricing and procedures.

Transportation

Bus riders must follow driver directions and safety rules at all times. Severe violations may result in suspension of bus privileges.

  • Be at the stop five minutes early; remain seated; keep hands/objects inside; no throwing objects or fighting.
  • Items that pose hazards (weapons, incendiaries, large objects) are prohibited.

Programs & Services

  • TAG, Title I, ELL, Special Education: Services are available per eligibility; contact the office for referrals and rights.
  • Homeless students: Immediate enrollment and transportation rights per McKinney‑Vento; contact district liaison.
  • Field Trips & Activities: Permission forms and behavior expectations apply; background checks required for chaperones.

Student Records & Rights

  • Parents (and eligible students 18+) may inspect education records and request corrections if inaccurate or misleading.
  • Directory information is released only as allowed by law and board policy; you may opt out—contact the office.
  • Complaints and appeals processes are available for standards, discrimination, and other concerns.

Visitors & Volunteers

  • All visitors check in at the office and wear a badge while on campus.
  • Volunteers and chaperones require an annual background check through the district office.
